Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum First Annual
“Welcome Aboard” Open House a Big Success!
Despite rainy weather, the First Annual “Welcome Aboard” Open House hosted by the Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum in Mackinaw City on June 6th was a great success. 726 visitors came aboard the Icebreaker Mackinaw WAGB-83 for free tours and demonstrations on knot tying and signal flags. Guests commented frequently the tour of the ship was entertaining and educational and they were delighted they had come. Bruce Benson, Interim Executive Director of museum stated, “We are especially thrilled that so many first-time guests came to visit and enjoy the Icebreaker Mackinaw in spite of the rainy weather. It’s been a great event and we look forward to hosting a bigger and better open house in 2011.”
Free hot dogs, chips and soft drinks were served to more than 200 visitors thanks to food donations from IGA Foodliner and Bell’s Fishery of Mackinaw City and Meijers, GFS Marketplace, WalMart, Oleson’s Food Store and Glen’s Fresh Marketplace of Petoskey. Door prizes were given away to Open House visitors and were provided by Mackinaw Kite Company, Shepler’s Ferry and the Pancake Chef Restaurant.
The Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum is located at 131 South Huron Avenue in Mackinaw City and is open seven days a weekmfrom 9 am to 5 pm through June 18. From June 19 through September 6, the museum is open from 9 am to 7 pm. For more information, visit www.themackinaw.org or call 231 436-9825.
